Why will it not let me invert the colours?
Light modules on a dark background are unreliable on iOS in particular. The guard is deliberate.
How small a margin is safe?
The standard asks for four modules. We tested one to four against plain, dark, and coloured backgrounds and all of them read; zero fails on anything but its own background colour.
